ftp Tutorial for Macintoshes

Launch Fetch. You should have the following window on your screen:

Most of the fields in yours will be empty. You'll recall in the sample new account email it said:

Here is your account:
 
Account: rflyer
Password: xk23fj4
Machine: he.net

Here's where we'll put that information.

1. This is where you put the domain name of the server.
   
   
2. Enter your account name here.
   
   
3. Put your password here. It will show dots instead of what your typing. That's to prevent someone from looking over you shoulder and finding out your password.
   
   
4. Enter "public_html".
   

Now you're ready to connect. Click on "OK." At this point your curser will turn into a cool animated dog.

You'll see a window that looks something like this:

The box on the left shows what's in your account's public_html directory on our server.

To upload your file click on "Put File..." A box will come up that looks something like this:

Locate the folder you web document is in on your Macintosh. Highlight it and click on "Open."

Since you're uploading an html file, the next box that comes up should look similar to this:

If it doesn't say "Text" next to "Format" then change it to say "Text." Whenever you upload a text document such as an HTML page, you should always upload it with "Text" selected.

If you were uploading a non-text file such as a GIF image, the box should look something like this:

If it doesn't say "Raw Data" next to "Format" then change it to say "Raw Data." Whenever you upload a non-text document such as a GIF, you should always upload it with "Raw Data" selected.

Then click on "OK." Our animated dog returns. You also get an animated pie chart that shows your progress.

When your file is done uploading, the window should look something like this:

Congratulations! You've just uploaded your first file. You can disconnect from the server by closing the window.
