Virtual Mail

Our Virtual Mail feature is included free of charge with Virtual Host accounts.

With this feature you can create virtual mail addresses and individually control where mail sent to those addresses is delivered.

For example, assuming you have the domain name mydomain.com, this feature enables you to use the addresses below (just a few of the infinite possiblities):

sales@mydomain.com
info@mydomain.com
webmaster@mydomain.com
The default setup redirects all mail sent to any address at mydomain.com to your mailbox at Dealer Support Services (...@he.net). So you don't even need to do any special configuration to take advantage of this capability immediately. You can make up virtual mail addresses as you need them.

Advanced virtual mail delivery

You can customize your virtual mail configuration so that mail sent to virtual mail addresses at your domain name are sent to other email address, either local accounts at Dealer Support Services, or remote hosts, such as compuserve.com, netcom.com, or aol.com, where people working with you may already have email accounts.

The .virtualmail file

You accomplish this by creating a file named .virtualmail (note the period at the start of .virtualmail) in your home directory.

The format is a delivery rule per line. Lines that are blank or that start with # are ignored. The delivery rules take the form:

    virtual-address real-address
virtual-address may be one of two forms:

real-address may be one of two forms:

Lines may be commented by adding a # after a rule which will cause the rest of the line to be ignored. The virtual-address and real-address are separated by spaces or tabs.

If you use FTP to upload your .virtualhost file be sure your FTP client is in text mode. This will ensure the end of line characters are translated appropriately. Unix uses LF (linefeeds) to indicate the end of lines, the Mac uses CR (carrige returns), and DOS uses CR LF pairs at the end of lines.

An example

Assume you have a virtual host named zorkle.com, and your account with Dealer Support Services has the username 'argo'. You also have a salesperson George at 7723.9999@compuserve.com, and your webmaster Jose at jlg2031@netcom.com (These are totally ficticious addresses). Also, in this example, you use the account at Dealer Support Services for your mail. You would setup your .virtualmail file as follows:
* argo # default rule: you will take everything else.
sales 7723.9999@compuserve.com # send sales orders and inquiries to George.
webmaster jlg2031@netcom.com # send web server configuration problems to Jose.
This provides you with the following effect:

sales@zorkle.com delivers to 7723.9999@compuserve.com
webmaster@zorkle.com delivers to jlg2031@netcom.com
anyname@zorkle.com delivers to argo@he.net, where anyname matches
anything other than sales and webmaster.

The default behavior

If you do not have a .virtualmail file in your home directory the default rule used is:
* username # default rule: you receive everything.
Where username is your account name at Dealer Support Services.

This means that you do not need to create a .virtualmail file if you are planning on having all virtual mail addresses delivered to your DSS account.

How long does it take for my changes to take effect?

Your .virtualmail file is checked 4 times daily for changes at 3am, 9am, 3pm, and 9pm PST.

Once your changes take effect your virtual mail addresses provide the same fast response as you receive with POP3/SMTP mail and your DSS mailbox.

As always, verify each email address you intend to use before distributing it to your contacts.
